I want to say that I remember my first interaction with something sweet, like a cookie or confection of some kind. It was with my grandfather at an Italian corner mart that to this day we talk about in my family. This corner mart has been handed down through the generations. They were your traditional Italian deli, they had everything from cold cuts to cookies and even pizza in the evenings out of the back window. They had dry goods like pasta, tomato sauce, even barrels of olives and bags of fresh bread too. The smell alone, of any of these items take me back to those simpler times as a kid.
I remember so vividly there were lots of display cases of Italian confections, but there was this one cookie, the italian raisin pillow. It's this soft puffy vanilla cookie with this fig newton like raisin filling stuffed in the middle and sugar dusted on the outside, let me just tell you, it's magical. I was probably 4 or 5 years old when I was first introduced to this magical italian raisin pillow. Now 3o+ years later, I found a recipe some italian Nona leaked from the depths of her italian cupboard, I knocked the flour off of it and I have refined it to be the flavor I remember and cherish.
Through this summer heat, we have begun testing for the upcoming fall season. Have no fear, we will bring back the favorites like the Cinna-roll cookie and the Soft glazed ginger cookies. We are also going to feature a few limited-time offer cookies. That's all I'm going to say for now about that, there's a lot to look forward to!
The Autumn season will be here before we realize it. It's my favorite time of year! This year it's different though, it's a different season in my life personally. I find myself to be extra nostalgic the past few years. It's exciting for me to share with you my stories and some of the flavors I have held so close that are tied to my memories. Through my whole career in food, it's always been about the flavors and how they transport you to past memories in your life. Each one of us, can tell a different story about a single flavor. It is what I call flavor teleportation. It happens to me with scents more often than flavors. Like how I can smell the rain just before it actually starts raining. (I've been ridiculed that it's not a thing, but it's true, I can smell the rain.) It brings me back to my Connecticut childhood standing on our back patio under the deck right about this time of year in the evening, right before the fireflies emerged from the woods. I could smell the humitity I guess, it is a particular smell, leave me a comment if you also can smell the rain.
Now transitioning to looking forward...
